Honoring Mary Without Worshiping Her
Objection
“Catholics treat Mary almost like a fourth person of the Trinity — statues, rosaries, titles like 'Queen of Heaven.' Isn't this Mariolatry that competes with worship due to God alone?”
The Catholic response
The Church carefully distinguishes latria, the adoration owed to God alone, from hyperdulia, the special (but still creaturely) honor given to Mary because of her unique role as Mother of the Redeemer. Scripture itself calls her 'blessed among women' and has all generations call her 'blessed' (Luke 1:42, 48), which is precisely what the Church does through devotions like the Rosary and the title Queen of Heaven — an image drawn from the ancient Davidic 'Queen Mother' (gebirah) who interceded with the king (1 Kings 2:19). Mary's greatness always points to Christ: at Cana she says simply, 'Do whatever he tells you' (John 2:5). The Fathers universally honored her as the New Eve whose obedience undid Eve's disobedience, a title already found in the second century. Honoring the mother does not compete with honoring the Son; it fulfills the commandment to honor our parents applied to the mother God himself chose, and every Marian doctrine (Mother of God, ever-virgin, Immaculate Conception, Assumption) exists to safeguard truths about who Christ is.
